What Is A Fire Door?

A fire door is a door that is specifically designed to slow the spread of fire through a building. It does this by delaying the passage of fire, heat, and smoke from one part of the building to another.

The door leaf and door frame must both meet regulations set by a governing body e.g. The British Woodworking Federation (BWF). Fire doors are able to keep flames at bay for at least half an hour.

  • FD30 – 30 minutes of fire protection
  • FD60 – 60 minutes of fire protection
  • FD90 – 90 minutes of fire protection
  • FD120 – 120 minutes of fire protection

Frequently Asked Questions

Is It Okay To Wedge Open A Fire Door?

While it might seem like a good idea to use a wedge to keep the door open, it’s actually not advisable and could lead to significant fines. Wedges can interfere with the door’s ability to close properly, which could put you and your family or colleagues at risk in the event of a fire.

If you need to keep a fire door open, there are other ways to do it that are much safer. You can install a door stop or holder, which will allow the door to stay open without putting anyone in danger.

Are Fire Doors A Legal Requirement?

Legally, all non-domestic properties are required to install fire doors. Building operators in England and Wales must appoint a responsible person to manage fire safety regulations as set out by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (RR0/FSO).

The RRO/FSO states that any fire-resisting doors and escape doors must be correctly installed and adequately maintained in order for them to be fit for purpose. It is advised in BS9999 that all fire doors are inspected every 6 months.

If, after a fire, it is found that you haven’t met your legal duties, you could be fined or even imprisoned as a result.

Where are fire doors required in the UK?:

Legally Required to Install Fire Doors

Businesses
Commercial Premises
Public Buildings
Residential Flats
Houses of Multiple Occupancy

NOT Legally Required to Install Fire Doors

Private Homes, Domestic Properties

What's The Difference Between Internal And External Fire Doors?

Internal Fire Doors

Internal fire doors are designed to serve the purpose of creating and protecting an escape route and to prevent the spread of fire throughout the building.

Often these are found in:

Kitchens
Catering Facilities
Stairwells
Storage Areas

External Fire Exit Doors

Fire exit doors are an external door which purpose is to allow a quick exit whilst not being accessible from the outside of the building. These doors can be left open if required and don’t have to be fire resistant.
